Lack of bipolar see-saw in response to Southern Ocean wind reduction

چکیده
[1] A cessation of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) significantly reduces northward oceanic heat transport. In response to anomalous freshwater flux, this leads to the classic ‘bipolar see-saw’ pattern of northern cooling and southern warming in surface air and ocean temperatures. By contrast, as shown here in a coupled climate model, both northern and southern cooling are observed for an AMOC reduction in response to reduced wind stress in the Southern Ocean (SO). For very weak SO wind stress, not only the overturning circulation collapses, but sea ice export from the SO is strongly reduced. Consequently, sea ice extent and albedo increase in this region. The resulting cooling overcompensates the warming by the reduced northward heat transport. The effect depends continuously on changes in wind stress and is reversed for increased winds. It may have consequences for abrupt climate change, the last deglaciation and climate sensitivity to increasing atmospheric CO2 concentration. Citation: Levermann, A., J. Schewe, and M. North Atlantic Deep Water collapse triggered by a Southern Ocean meltwater pulse in a glacial climate state
[1] It is generally accepted that surface freshwater anomalies in the Southern Ocean drive increases in North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW) formation via a bipolar density see-saw. We find that a Southern Ocean freshwater pulse of comparable magnitude to meltwater pulse 1A, shuts down, instead of strengthens, NADW in a glacial climate simulation. Unlike the modern-day simulation, the glacial exper...
متن کاملOn the response of Southern Ocean water-masses to atmospheric meridional moisture advection
[1] We investigate the role of atmospheric moisture advection in determining Southern Ocean water-mass properties in a coupled climate model. Two sensitivity experiments are presented in which the winds advecting moisture are either reduced or enhanced south of 45 S. It is shown that a variation in meridional winds in the Southern Ocean can generate large anomalies of subsurface potential tempe...
متن کاملA Southern Ocean trigger for Northwest Pacific ventilation during the Holocene?
Holocene ocean circulation is poorly understood due to sparsity of dateable marine archives with submillennial-scale resolution. Here we present a record of mid-depth water radiocarbon contents in the Northwest (NW) Pacific Ocean over the last 12.000 years, which shows remarkable millennial-scale variations relative to changes in atmospheric radiocarbon inventory. Apparent decoupling of these v...
متن کاملEstimates of wind energy input to the Ekman layer in the Southern Ocean from surface drifter data
[1] The energy input to the upper ocean Ekman layer is assessed for the Southern Ocean by examining the rotary cross spectrum between wind stress and surface velocity for frequencies between 0 and 2 cpd. The wind stress is taken from European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts ERA-40 reanalysis, and drifter measurements from 15 m depth are used to represent surface velocities, with an ad...
متن کاملEddy Heat Flux in the Southern Ocean: Response to Variable Wind Forcing
The authors assess the role of time-dependent eddy variability in the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) in influencing warming of the Southern Ocean. For this, an eddy-resolving quasigeostrophic model of the wind-driven circulation is used, and the response of circumpolar transport, eddy kinetic energy, and eddy heat transport to changes in winds is quantified. On interannual time scales, the...
